Alabama nurses in Post University's NP programs, and what the ABN asks first
Alabama nurses can study any of Post University's three MSN nurse practitioner tracks; Post's current NP disclosure says Yes to all three under Alabama's license title, Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner. Unlike Georgia or Florida, Alabama screens outside programs before their students train here: the ABN expects the school's letter of intent no later than 15 days ahead of your first Alabama clinical day, which pulls your preceptor search forward.

Alabama's row in Post's NP disclosure
Post's coursework meets the education side of the CRNP credential. Study is online; the Alabama part is 540 precepted primary care hours on the FNP or AGPCNP, or 630 mental and behavioral health hours on the PMHNP.

The ABN letter of intent, and why it sets your calendar
Rule 610-X-3-.09 of the Alabama code reaches advanced practice programs from other states, not just pre-licensure schools. Such a program files a letter of intent, plus approval documents, with the ABN, and the Board wants it in hand 15 days or more before students begin clinical learning in Alabama. The Board's FAQ states plainly that students stay out of Alabama clinicals until approval comes through and the program has paid its annual out-of-state charge.
What the ABN expects the submission to carry
- You: your name, plus your Alabama or multistate RN license number
- Your clinical supervisor: name and license number
- The facility hosting you
- Nursing leadership at that facility: a statement from its DON or CNO
- Post's supervising faculty member: an Alabama or multistate RN license number
Post makes that filing, through the Clinical Coordinator and its compliance officer, and its catalog already cautions that some boards want a clinical plan well ahead of time. For you it is a calendar problem: a preceptor who only says yes the week before term leaves the letter nowhere to fit. State board notice covers the wider rule.
Licensing, collaboration and the Tennessee line
AANP rates Alabama reduced practice: for at least one element of NP practice, the NP keeps a physician collaboration in place under regulation, and two boards, Nursing and Medical Examiners, oversee NPs together. In Post's catalog that physician is an acceptable preceptor as well, though NPs come first; Post's preceptor standards give the full list.
Alabama came into the Nurse Licensure Compact later than its neighbors, on January 1, 2020, and has not enacted the APRN Compact. Per the ABN's FAQ, MSN and other post-licensure students doing Alabama clinicals need an unencumbered RN license: an Alabama one, or a multistate license from any other compact state.
Mississippi, Georgia and Florida are Yes states in Post's table. Tennessee, across the northern border, is marked No, so a clinic over the line from north Alabama is closed to Post NP hours. Clinicals in any other state also need Post's approval first; license rules for clinicals explains.
Where Alabama students look, and the rural preceptor credit
The Birmingham metro counts close to 1.2 million residents; Huntsville (about 556,000), Mobile and Montgomery (each around 400,000) come next. In Mobile you will see USA Health and Infirmary Health; in Montgomery, Baptist Health; statewide, UAB Medicine and the Huntsville Hospital Health System. They are search landmarks, with no known Post connection; use them to find nearby outpatient practices, keeping FNP and AGPCNP hours in primary care.
Alabama's preceptor credit, APTIP, is administered by the state AHEC program office and lowers income tax for community-based preceptors, NPs among them, who teach in rural Alabama areas designated medically underserved. Only rotations for schools physically in Alabama qualify, which leaves Post out. According to the Department of Revenue, the credit began with tax year 2024 and lapses September 29, 2031.

Is ABN approval needed before my Post clinicals in Alabama?
Yes, through Post. Rule 610-X-3-.09 requires an outside program to send the Board its letter of intent in advance, with 15 days as the minimum, and the ABN keeps students out until it approves. Post files it, not you, but it needs your preceptor and site details, so settle your plan early and ask the Clinical Coordinator about timing.
Can a Huntsville-area student do clinicals in Tennessee?
No. Tennessee gets a No in Post's current NP disclosure for both NP licensure and prescribing, which rules it out for Post clinicals even though your multistate RN license reaches it. Georgia and Mississippi are Yes states, open with Post's prior approval.
Is Post's PMHNP track open to Alabama residents?
Yes. Post lists the PMHNP for Alabama alongside the FNP and AGPCNP. Its 630 precepted hours are spent in psychiatric settings with patients of all ages, and each Alabama placement still needs the ABN letter, so plan psychiatric sites just as early.
Would my preceptor earn Alabama's preceptor tax credit for teaching me?
No. APTIP counts rotations only for eligible programs at schools physically in Alabama, and Post is in Connecticut. Know that before your first call, and lead with your course, clinical days and Post's approval steps.
