Finding an NP preceptor in Connecticut, metro by metro
Connecticut's big health systems each run students through their own process, and each one starts with an agreement between the school and the system rather than with the student. For a Post NP student, that means the affiliation agreement and the preceptor have to be lined up well before the term, and it makes independent and community practices worth a close look alongside the familiar names.

Four metros, four different searches
Connecticut is small, but its clinical map splits cleanly into four metro areas, each with different systems and different public rules for students. The table uses 2025 Census estimates and lists only what each system publishes about students; none of these systems is described anywhere as a Post partner.

Waterbury: Post's home city
Post's administrative offices are in Waterbury, but Post's clinicals happen where each student lives, so Waterbury matters most to students who live nearby. Two hospitals anchor the city. Saint Mary's Hospital, a Catholic, not-for-profit community teaching hospital, belongs to Trinity Health Of New England; no student-placement page for it was found. Waterbury Hospital became UConn Health Waterbury Hospital on March 1, 2026, as part of the UConn Health Community Network.
UConn Health's rule is that any assignment earning academic credit needs a clinical affiliation agreement, set up between the school and the host department, and its current page tells students seeking one to contact their school program. For an FNP or AGPCNP student, remember that Post requires every clinical hour in primary care, so a hospital system matters through its outpatient primary care practices, not its inpatient units.
Hartford and the middle of the state
Hartford HealthCare's new student management system, Clinician Nexus, went live in fall 2025, and its older RedCap route was retired on January 1, 2026. Its own FAQ says the first phase covers allied health programs and leaves nursing, medical assistant and physician rotations out for now, and existing affiliation agreements are unaffected. No NP-student request process appears on HHC's public pages.
Trinity Health Of New England publishes the clearest process in the state, on a Learner Onboarding page covering Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center and Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital. It is written for all learners, not NP students alone:
- Agreement firstConfirm with your preceptor or coordinator that your school has an active affiliation agreement with Trinity Health Of New England; without one, the page says you cannot proceed.
- Health formSubmit the Learner Health Certification Form at least four weeks before your start date.
- OnboardingComplete the orientation packet and onboarding forms, then badging and parking through your preceptor or coordinator.
New Haven and Fairfield County
Yale New Haven Health lists its hospitals as Bridgeport, Greenwich, Lawrence + Memorial, Westerly and Yale New Haven, and its public pages show no process for NP students. In the southwest corner, Danbury, Norwalk, New Milford and Sharon hospitals joined Northwell Health when its merger with Nuvance Health closed on May 7, 2025. The Nuvance Health Learning Institute page is headed for medical, nurse practitioner and physician assistant students and says its mission covers NPs, but the rotations and 30-day paperwork window it lists are for medical students, and the Danbury and Norwalk nursing pages show no placement process.
Fairfield County students face one more limit. New York is marked No in Post's NP disclosure, so a practice just across the state line does not fit Post's clinical rule as written; the RN license guide explains the approved-state requirement.
Community health centers and independent practices
Some of the most useful sites are outside the hospital systems. Community Health Center, Inc., a federally qualified health center based in Middletown, says students who want training there must ask their school to contact CHC with the request. It lists affiliation agreements with more than 30 schools, and its trainee table from 2019 includes MSN students in family, psychiatric mental health and adult-gerontology NP programs.
That model, a request that comes from the school, is exactly how Post's contract step works. You submit the site through Post's Affiliation Agreement Tracker, and Post's Academic Affairs staff contact the site within seven business days. Independent primary care practices and outpatient psychiatric practices follow the same route, with one agreement covering one site. Post also notes that an existing agreement is no promise of approval at that site; the Clinical Coordinator still approves each placement. The affiliation agreement guide has the details.
Timing a Connecticut placement
Stack the lead times and the calendar gets tight. Post's contact with the site can take up to seven business days after your request, the agreement then has to be fully executed, Trinity wants your health form four weeks before the start, and Post removes you from the course term if the packet is incomplete at the end of Week 1. Count back from the first Monday of your preceptorship term and start the site search at least a term earlier. The Week 1 guide lists every item.

Questions Post students ask
Does Yale New Haven Health take NP students from online programs?
Its public pages show no process for NP-student requests, so there is nothing published to follow. Any placement at a large system starts with an agreement between the school and the system, which for Post means the Affiliation Agreement Tracker request and Academic Affairs contacting the site.
How far ahead should I plan for a Trinity Health Of New England site?
Trinity's Learner Onboarding page requires an active affiliation agreement between your school and Trinity before anything else, then a health certification form at least four weeks before your start date. Add Post's own agreement and approval steps, and a full term of lead time is sensible.
Is Waterbury Hospital part of UConn Health now?
Yes. Since March 1, 2026, it has been UConn Health Waterbury Hospital, part of the UConn Health Community Network. UConn Health's published rule for academic-credit placements is a clinical affiliation agreement set up between the school and the host department; no NP-specific page was found for the Waterbury hospital.
Can I do FNP clinical hours at a Connecticut hospital?
Post requires FNP and AGPCNP students to complete all clinical hours in a primary care setting, so a hospital system helps through its outpatient primary care practices. PMHNP students use mental and behavioral health sites, which can include acute mental health care for courses such as N 565.
Does Hartford HealthCare's Clinician Nexus handle NP student requests?
Not yet, by its own account. HHC's FAQ says the first phase of Clinician Nexus supports allied health programs, with nursing, medical assistant and physician rotations not included in that phase. It also says existing affiliation agreements are not affected by the change.
