Can a West Virginia nurse earn a Post University NP degree?
Yes. West Virginia sits in the open column of Post University's current NP disclosure for all three MSN nurse practitioner tracks, FNP, AGPCNP and PMHNP, so you can enroll from Morgantown, Charleston or anywhere between and train locally. Because Post takes part in NC-SARA, the state's higher education office generally stays out of the approval chain, which leaves your license and your preceptor as the real work.

All three tracks are open to West Virginia residents, and all coursework is online. The in-person work is precepted: a primary care total of 540 hours for family or adult-gerontology students, and 630 psychiatric hours for PMHNP students, logged in West Virginia or an approved neighbor. Which West Virginia office cares about your clinicals
The WV RN Board only regulates pre-licensure education. For graduate and advanced-degree programs, its out-of-state resources page points elsewhere, naming two contacts: whichever national body accredits the program, plus the Higher Education Policy Commission (WVHEPC).
A WVHEPC office, Nursing Education and Workforce Development, wrote the rotation guide that answers the question. Its test for an APRN or graduate program from another state has two parts, and either one brings in the commission: a school that sits outside NC-SARA, and a school placing ten students or more at a single site.
Post is an NC-SARA participant, and the head count at any single site is something only Post can see, so confirming that nothing extra is due falls to the Clinical Coordinator and Post's compliance officer. The state board notice page covers Post's broader 60-day caution.
Preceptors in a state of small metros
West Virginia's largest metros are modest. Charleston counts about 200,000 residents; Huntington-Ashland reaches roughly 366,000, but only about half of them live on the West Virginia side, and Morgantown and the Eastern Panhandle's Hagerstown-Martinsburg area are smaller still in state.
Expect to run into three large names. One is Vandalia Health, an umbrella over Mon Health, CAMC and Davis Health System; the others are WVU Medicine and Marshall Health Network. Treat them as places where outpatient clinics cluster, not as sites that take Post students. FNP and AGPCNP hours must be in primary care; PMHNP students look for behavioral health settings that see patients of all ages.
AANP rates the state reduced practice. For three years, prescribing by a newly licensed NP depends on collaborating with a physician under an agreement, and Schedule II narcotic orders are held to three days' supply. Whether that window affects precepting is answered below.
Your license, and five open borders
RN compact licensing took effect for West Virginians on January 19, 2018. No APRN Compact statute exists in the state. The same WVHEPC guide ties the license to your home: a graduate student whose primary residence is West Virginia needs a West Virginia RN license for those hours, while one living elsewhere needs a multistate license.
Post's table opens all three tracks in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and Kentucky, and each of the five belongs to the compact (Ohio from 2023, Pennsylvania from July 7, 2025). That makes a Huntington student's Ohio practice or a Martinsburg student's Maryland clinic possible, provided Post signs off first, as it must for any clinical beyond your state of residence. Will West Virginia's higher education office need to approve Post first?
Usually not, going by the WVHEPC guide. Approval is needed only when a graduate program's institution is outside NC-SARA or places ten-plus students at one site. Post participates in NC-SARA, and the RN Board's reach stops at pre-licensure programs. Post's Clinical Coordinator and compliance officer confirm state requirements for each clinical plan.
Can an Eastern Panhandle student train across the Maryland line?
Possibly. Martinsburg shares a metro with Hagerstown, and Maryland is open for every Post NP track and part of the compact, so your West Virginia multistate RN license carries over. Two things come first: Post's sign-off on a clinical outside your home state, and a signed affiliation agreement between Post and the Maryland practice.
Could a newer NP, still collaborating under West Virginia's three-year rule, precept me?
Often, yes. The collaborative period is a state prescribing rule, not one of Post's preceptor criteria. Post weighs license, national certification, graduate preparation and experience, as its preceptor standards describe. If the NP meets those, the Clinical Coordinator can approve them; ask before the agreement letter goes out.
Is Post's PMHNP available in West Virginia?
Yes. Post's current disclosure lists the PMHNP for West Virginia along with the FNP and AGPCNP. Its 630 hours are psychiatric, spread across patients from childhood to old age, so a West Virginia PMHNP search centers on behavioral health clinics and psychiatric practices wherever in the state you live.
