Maine and Post University's NP program: license title, supervised start and places to search
Post University's current NP disclosure says Yes for Maine in the FNP, AGPCNP and PMHNP, so a Maine RN can enroll without leaving home and log clinical hours in-state. Maine's line in Post's NP disclosure
Post's table gives Maine the title Certified Nurse Practitioner, answers Yes for the NP license and for prescriptive authority, and names the Maine State Board of Nursing as the body in charge.

Set beside its New England neighbors, the row reads a little differently: it carries no national certification entry, and the DEA number has no optional tag. Neither affects your coursework. Both are worth checking with the board when you apply, because Post's table is a summary and its closing note says licensure rules change often.
Full practice in Maine comes after a supervised start
AANP files Maine under full practice, though a new NP has to earn it: the first 24 months or more are spent under an NP or physician supervisor, unless the employer is a clinic or hospital whose medical director is a physician. Post's row describes that stage as a collaborative agreement with a physician or supervising NP.
Once past those two years, a Maine NP practices on their own authority, so an experienced NP in a small or solo primary care practice is a realistic preceptor for you. Post's preceptor requirements set the credentials: certification in your population focus, graduate preparation and at least a year of experience.
Does Maine's board require anything from Post?
Not that our research found. Maine's board is silent on clinical placements by schools based in other states. Its Chapter 7 is about approving Maine's prelicensure programs, and placements by outside schools do not come up in it.
The student exemption in Maine's Nurse Practice Act (32 MRSA §2103(2)) covers practice that is integral to a board-approved program leading to a first license, language that fits prelicensure study rather than an RN in graduate school. Post already requires you to be licensed, actively and without restriction, wherever you train, so your Maine clinical hours happen as a licensed RN. Portland, Lewiston-Auburn, Bangor and the miles between
About 578,000 people live in the Portland-South Portland metro, more than Bangor and Lewiston-Auburn combined, and practices tend to follow the population. Among Maine's larger systems are MaineHealth and Northern Light Health, with MaineGeneral Health and Central Maine Healthcare rounding out the group; they show where NP care happens, not where Post students are expected, and each site you pick needs an affiliation agreement with Post, requested through the Affiliation Agreement Tracker.
Beyond those three metros the drives lengthen, and a 135-hour preceptorship in one 8-week term already means about 17 clinical hours a week. Weigh the commute before you accept a distant site. FNP and AGPCNP students need primary care settings; PMHNP students need mental and behavioral health settings that serve patients of all ages.
Your RN license for Maine clinicals
Maine joined multistate licensing under the compact in January 2018, and Post's row takes either a Maine license or a multistate one. The compact governs RN practice only. The APRN Compact is not law in Maine, so the NP license you earn after Post will be a Maine-only credential.
For many Maine students the nearest out-of-state option is New Hampshire, a compact state that answers Yes for all three tracks in Post's table. Hours there need Post's prior specialization approval because they fall outside your state of residence, and the Clinical Coordinator decides whether your multistate privilege meets Post's license wording. Can Maine residents take Post's PMHNP?
Yes. Maine is among the states where Post's current NP disclosure lists all three tracks, the PMHNP included. That track asks for 630 precepted hours over five courses, in psychiatric and behavioral health settings serving children through older adults. The PMHNP guide walks through each course.
What will my NP credential be called in Maine?
Certified Nurse Practitioner, according to Post's Maine row. You apply to the Maine State Board of Nursing after finishing Post's program, and the row adds a collaborative agreement for your supervised start and a DEA number for prescribing. Check the board's current application requirements, including certification, when you get there.
How long before a new Maine NP can practice independently?
At least 24 months, per AANP, spent under a supervising physician or NP, unless your employer, a clinic or hospital, has a physician serving as medical director. Full practice authority follows. Post's row lists the same period as a collaborative agreement with a physician or supervising NP.
Do I ever need to travel to Connecticut?
No campus visit is part of Post's NP specializations; the American Sentinel College runs them online, and clinicals happen near home. The NP courses do include mandatory live online sessions, such as exams and presentations, which you schedule around your clinical days in Maine.
