What Post lists for Vermont
Vermont's row calls the credential Nurse Practitioner, answers Yes on the NP license and Yes on prescriptive authority, and names the Vermont State Board of Nursing, whose licensing work runs through the Secretary of State.

The collaboration line needs its context. AANP rates Vermont full practice and treats the agreement as a transition step that lasts only through an NP's first 24 months and 2,400 practice hours, with a physician or APRN licensed in Vermont. Post's row states the agreement with no time limit, so read the board's rule when you apply.
Vermont's own answer on who can precept you
Vermont's board FAQ settles the preceptor question directly. It allows two kinds of preceptor for APRN students, APRNs and physicians, provided each holds an active Vermont license with no encumbrance, has practiced in the role and population focus you are training for, and coordinates directly with program faculty. A PA cannot fill the role.
Post's standard sits comfortably inside that. The 2025-26 catalog accepts an MD or DO and recommends an NP for at least two clinical courses. The detail students most often miss is population focus: family or adult primary care for FNP and AGPCNP hours, psychiatric practice for PMHNP hours. Post's preceptor requirements list the rest.
Schools from other states and Vermont sites
Our research found no Vermont rule, FAQ or statute on schools from other states using Vermont clinical sites. What the board's 2023 rules do say is that a nursing education program may not operate in Vermont unless the board approves it, with an exception for programs delivered entirely online that the state's Agency of Education has approved. The licensure exemption for students, at 26 V.S.A. 1583(2), is likewise tied to board-approved programs.
Post's approved-state rule has you train on an active RN license either way, and the catalog hands state requirements to the clinical coordinator and compliance officer. If a Vermont practice raises the approval question, pass it to them early.
Where Vermont NP students search
The map here is regional. Burlington-South Burlington, about 228,000 people, is the one true metro, and University of Vermont Health spans UVM Medical Center plus the Central Vermont and Porter medical centers. The Rutland area has Rutland Regional Medical Center, and Southwestern Vermont Medical Center is a member hospital of Dartmouth Health across the border. On the Connecticut River, the Lebanon-Claremont area straddles the state line, putting Upper Valley practices on both banks within reach.
Treat these as landmarks for NP care, not promises of a placement; any site you choose needs an affiliation agreement with Post. Act 183 of 2022 did fund one round of preceptor incentive grants in fiscal 2023, but eligibility was narrow: the preceptor worked at a Vermont critical access hospital and the student attended a Vermont school. A Post preceptor would not have qualified.
Licensing for your Vermont clinicals
Since February 2022 Vermont has been a compact state, so Post's row lets a multistate license stand in for a Vermont one. The board's Rule 4.1 covers the reverse case: a nurse licensed through another compact state can work in Vermont on that license until Vermont becomes their primary residence, when a Vermont license is required. Post ties NP enrollment to where you live, so update Post when you move.
An Upper Valley resident can take a multistate license to a Lebanon practice, since New Hampshire is a compact state as well, but Post requires prior specialization approval for any hours outside your home state. Questions Post students ask
Is a physician assistant allowed to be my preceptor in Vermont?
Not for NP clinicals. Vermont's board limits APRN-student preceptors to APRNs and Vermont-licensed physicians, and Post's current catalog names an MD or DO without mentioning PAs. Begin with NPs, since Post recommends one for at least two clinical courses and prefers NPs throughout.
Is the PMHNP open to Vermont residents?
Yes. Post's current NP disclosure lists Vermont for the PMHNP as well as the FNP and AGPCNP. PMHNP students complete 630 precepted hours in mental and behavioral health settings serving patients from children to older adults. Plan the child and adolescent course and the substance misuse course early, since each needs a practice that sees young patients. The PMHNP page lists all five.
Could I do clinicals in New York, just west of Vermont?
No. Post's table puts New York among the seven states answered No for the NP license and prescriptive authority, which rules it out as a clinical state for Post students, and New York is not a compact state either. Past the state line, Vermont students can look east to New Hampshire, or to Massachusetts with a license there.
Which Vermont office issues the NP license?
Post's table names the Vermont State Board of Nursing, part of the Office of Professional Regulation under Vermont's Secretary of State. You apply once you graduate and hold national certification. Until then, your clinicals rest on the RN license, Vermont-issued or multistate, as Post's row allows.
