Nebraska: Post's own preceptor rules set the bar for NP clinicals

Post's disclosure for Nebraska
Nebraska's row goes a step past the RN license and national certification: it also names a transition-to-practice agreement.

AANP attaches a number to that transition: a supervised stretch of 2,000 practice hours before a Nebraska NP practices fully alone. That shapes your first NP job. Your clinicals follow Post's totals instead, 540 precepted hours for the FNP or AGPCNP and 630 for the PMHNP.
A regulator that leaves graduate clinicals to the school
Nebraska's licensing unit draws a clear line. Its Board approves pre-licensure programs for state residents, while programs that begin after the RN license, online or in any other format, sit outside its oversight. A Post NP student has no state approval to wait on, unlike the recognition process in North Dakota.
DHHS also describes how preceptors are found: the program works them out with the clinical facility, and for post-licensure programs the qualifications are the program's to set. Post's catalog standard on the preceptor requirements page is therefore the test here, applied by the Clinical Coordinator. Following NCSBN, DHHS treats practice as happening wherever the student sits, so it looks for faculty licensed in that state, with a Nebraska APRN license for anyone teaching APRN students. If a clinic asks about faculty licensing, the Clinical Coordinator answers.
The APRN board itself may be changing. Rosters from July 2026 on no longer show a separate APRN board and seat APRN, CNS and CNM members on the Board of Nursing, though no statute confirming the move was found. Check DHHS before you apply for your NP license.
Omaha, Lincoln, Grand Island and the systems to research
Omaha's metro passes one million people, roughly 887,000 of them on the Nebraska side and the rest in Iowa. Lincoln's metro holds about 352,000 and Grand Island's about 78,000. Bryan Health is one system to research; others are CHI Health, Nebraska Medicine and the Nebraska Methodist Health System, along with independent primary care and psychiatric practices. For the pediatric parts of N 589 in the FNP or N 563 in the PMHNP, Children's Nebraska is a name worth checking.
Primary care is where FNP and AGPCNP hours belong, while PMHNP hours need behavioral health settings that see patients from childhood to old age. These are search leads, not organizations with any Post arrangement.
Licensing across Nebraska's borders
A Nebraska RN license has been eligible for multistate status since January 19, 2018, and Post's CastleBranch license item accepts one. Every neighbor except one is both a compact member and a Yes in Post's table: Iowa, South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado and Missouri. Each still needs Post's prior approval, since the hours fall outside your home state.
The exception is to the south. Kansas belongs to the compact, but Post's table now answers No there for the NP license and prescriptive authority, a change since the 2023 version, and Post limits clinicals to approved states. A preceptor just over that line is outside Post's rules whatever your license says. Nebraska has not enacted the APRN Compact, which in any case covers NP licenses, not the RN license at the heart of Post's clinical-state rule.

Questions Post students ask
Do I need Nebraska board approval before Post clinicals?
No state approval step applies. Nebraska's Board oversees programs that lead to a first nursing license, and Post's NP specializations come after the RN, so that oversight stops short of them. Post's own steps still apply: the Clinical Coordinator's approval and a signed affiliation agreement.
Could my clinical be in Iowa, across from Omaha?
Yes, once Post approves it in advance. Iowa belongs to the compact and carries a Yes for every Post NP track, so a Nebraska multistate license reaches it. The prior approval is needed because the clinical happens outside your state of residence.
Why is a preceptor in Kansas off the table?
Kansas reads No in Post's current table on both NP questions, and Post does not enroll NP students who reside there. Since Post permits clinical hours only in approved states, a Kansas clinic falls outside the rules, even for a Nebraska resident holding a compact license.
What is the transition-to-practice agreement in Post's Nebraska row?
It is a licensure step after graduation, not part of your clinicals. Post lists an agreement with a physician or APRN, and AANP counts 2,000 supervised practice hours before full practice. Confirm the current terms with Nebraska DHHS when you apply.
