N 581 is where Post University FNP and AGPCNP students log their first precepted hours: 135 of them in the 2021-22 course description, in primary care, with adolescents, adults and older adults who have stable, chronic and acute conditions. Every part of the clinical setup is new at this point, from the first affiliation agreement to the first preceptor login, so this is the preceptorship that rewards the earliest start.

What N 581 covers
Post's catalog titles the course Advanced Practice Nursing I Preceptorship Experience. It carries 3 credits, and its 2021-22 description, the latest version available to read, sets it at 135 precepted clinical hours. The patients it names are adolescents, adults and older adults with stable, chronic and acute diseases, seen in a primary care setting.
Its prerequisite is N 580 Advanced Practice Nursing I, the didactic course whose content you practice in the clinic. N 581 belongs to both primary care tracks: the FNP and the AGPCNP share N 580 through N 583 before splitting into maternal and child care or aging. Post does not publish that track mapping directly; it comes from reading the prerequisites, and the current course description could not be retrieved, so confirm the hours and objectives in your syllabus. American Sentinel University's 2019 FNP and AGPCNP pages, from before the merger, listed N 581 in both sequences at 135 hours.
Where it falls in your program
N 581 opens the clinical half of the program. Ahead of it sit the core courses and the 3P gate, which asks for a 3.0 GPA across N 512, N 521 and N 522PE and a score of at least 67% on the APEA 3P exam. Since Post allows NP students only one course at a time, N 580 normally fills the term just before N 581.
That sequence gives you a clear clock. By the time N 580 begins, your preceptor search should be close to done, because every item in the N 581 packet is due before its first week closes. Post's 2024 schedule offered NP courses only in odd-month terms, so check the current schedule for when N 581 runs after your N 580. The practice and preceptor that fit
Look for a primary care practice whose patients run from teenagers to older adults: family medicine, internal medicine and adult primary care offices are the natural candidates. A panel that mixes routine chronic disease follow-up with same-day acute visits matches the course description well. The description does not name young children or obstetric care; for FNP students those patients come later, in N 589.
Post's preceptor rules apply from the first course. It expects a current license with no encumbrances, national board certification matching your population focus, graduate preparation if the preceptor is an APRN, and a year or more of practice. A physician (MD or DO) is acceptable, though Post would like NPs to precept two or more of your clinical courses. Your preceptor also cannot be your direct supervisor or a relative; see who cannot precept you.
One choice pays off twice: a practice whose population also fits N 583, where the same age range returns with more complex problems, can carry you through two courses.
The first-time setup
Later preceptorships reuse much of what you build here. For N 581, each piece is new, and several involve people outside Post who work on their own timelines.
- CastleBranch fully compliant. Post lets NP students register for courses past the 3P set, or log hours, only with a compliant account, and the background check and drug screen repeat every year.
- Your first affiliation agreement. Once the practice says yes, file the request in the Affiliation Agreement Tracker. Someone from Academic Affairs contacts the site within seven business days, and the agreement must be fully executed before hours there can count.
- Your preceptor's paperwork. A signed preceptor agreement letter, plus a license report, certification and CV from the preceptor.
- Your own documents. Your RN license report, the student contact form and, for California students only, the NP preceptor form.
- An NP Clinical Schedule agreed with the preceptor for all eight weeks.
- A Typhon login for your preceptor. Post's clinical staff help preceptors log in to the tracking system and complete student evaluations, according to a Post job posting.

What an N 581 week looks like
Spread across eight weeks, 135 hours comes to about 17 clinical hours a week. For a full-time RN that usually means two long clinic days, or three shorter ones, every week of the term, and a missed week has to be made up inside the same eight weeks. Build the NP Clinical Schedule with your preceptor before the term, and plan around your own work rotation so a schedule change at your job does not cost you clinic days.

How many clinical hours is N 581 at Post?
The 2021-22 course description sets N 581 at 135 precepted clinical hours. It is one of only two FNP and AGPCNP preceptorships with a published per-course figure, alongside N 589. The current description could not be read, so confirm the number in your syllabus.
Can a physician be my N 581 preceptor?
Yes. Physicians, MD or DO, are on Post's list of acceptable NP preceptors. The catalog also recommends an NP preceptor in at least half of your clinical courses and names all of them as the ideal. Using a physician for N 581 leaves room to meet that recommendation later.
Can I start searching for an N 581 preceptor before I pass the 3P exam?
Post's published rules set a finish line, a complete packet by the end of Week 1, rather than an earliest date to search. Beginning during the 3P coursework gives the affiliation agreement and the preceptor's paperwork time to finish before N 580 ends.
What happens if my N 581 packet is not complete by the end of Week 1?
Post removes you from the clinical course term. Because NP students move through one course at a time, that pushes back every course that follows. Your Student Success Advisor can map out the next available term with you, and the 36-month completion limit keeps running.
Do FNP and AGPCNP students both take N 581?
Yes. Both tracks take N 580 and N 581, then N 582 and N 583, before the FNP moves to maternal and child care and the AGPCNP to aging. The mapping comes from course prerequisites, so check your own program plan with your Student Success Advisor.
