N 561: the first psychiatric preceptorship in Post's PMHNP
N 561 Advanced Practice Psych Nursing I Preceptorship Experience is the course where a Post University PMHNP student first logs hours beside a psychiatric preceptor. Post prints no hour count for it alone; the program's 630 hours point to 135. Because nothing carries over from an earlier clinical term, this is also the first time you assemble the full Week 1 file from scratch.

Where N 561 falls in the PMHNP
Post's catalog lists N 561 in its table of nurse practitioner courses that require a preceptor, and it is the lowest-numbered of the five PMHNP preceptorships: N 561, N 563, N 565, N 567 and N 569. Post's published 2024 nursing course schedule shortens its title to "Psych Nursing I".
Its didactic partner is N 560 Advanced Practice Psych Nursing I, which that 2024 schedule calls "Psychiatric Assessment Across the Life Span". N 560 opens only after the 3P gate: its 2021-22 description lists N 502, N 503, N 515PE, N 512, N 521 and a passed 3P exam as prerequisites. NP students may take a single course per 8-week term, and Post's descriptions make each paired didactic course the gateway to its preceptorship (N 564 before N 565, for example), so expect N 560 in the term right before N 561.
Neither the 2025-26 course descriptions nor the nursing section of the 2026-27 catalog was readable when this guide was written. Check current prerequisites in Post's catalog and your personal term plan with your Student Success Advisor.
How many hours N 561 carries
Post publishes one PMHNP hour figure: 630 precepted clinical hours, in the 2025-26 catalog. The newest course descriptions that could be read, from 2021-22, give per-course hours for just two PMHNP courses: 135 for N 565 and 90 for N 567. Set aside N 567's 90 and 540 hours remain for four courses, which is 135 each and matches the printed N 565 figure.
So for N 561, 135 is what the track total implies, not a number Post states for the course. An older source lines up with it: American Sentinel University's PMHNP page, archived in October 2020 before the merger, showed 135 hours for N 561. Your syllabus and the Clinical Coordinator set the real requirement, and they outrank any arithmetic on this page.
If the course does carry 135 hours, one 8-week term works out to roughly 17 precepted hours a week (our computation). With a preceptor who keeps full clinic days, that is two long days or three shorter ones; the pacing guide shows how to plan the weeks and record them on the NP Clinical Schedule.

The preceptor and setting that suit a first psychiatric term
In Post's catalog, the PMHNP clinical setting is mental and behavioral health care for patients of every age. For a first preceptorship that follows an assessment course, the strongest match is a preceptor whose ordinary week includes new-patient psychiatric evaluations, diagnostic interviews and medication follow-ups with people of different ages. An outpatient psychiatric practice or a community mental health center usually offers that mix.
To clear Post's NP bar, the preceptor needs an unencumbered license that is current, national certification in the population focus, a graduate degree at the master's or doctoral level, and a year or more in practice. A psychiatrist (MD or DO) is acceptable. Post's guidance, though, favors nurse practitioners for two or more of your clinical courses, ideally all, so opening with a psychiatric NP in N 561 banks one of those two early. Building your first Week 1 file
Each Post clinical course ends its first week with the same check, and a student whose file is short is removed from that course term. Later preceptorships reuse some of the groundwork. For N 561 all of it is new, so give this term the longest runway of the five.

- Between the 3P exam and N 560Confirm your preceptor and submit the site through Post's Affiliation Agreement Tracker. Academic Affairs staff reach the site contact within seven business days; the contract must be fully executed before Week 1. Check now whether your state board expects a clinical plan, since Post notes some want it up to 60 days ahead.
- During N 560Put the preceptor's license report, certification and CV together, have the agreement letter signed, and fill in the NP Clinical Schedule with dates the preceptor has actually agreed to.
- In the last week of N 560Confirm CastleBranch shows you compliant, including the background check and drug screen NP students renew every year, and have your RN license report and student contact form ready to go.

Passing the 3P exam unlocks N 560, not a preceptor. Start the search only after your score arrives and the whole N 561 file has about one 8-week term to come together.
Where N 561 can take place
Post limits NP clinical work to approved NP specialization states in which you hold an active, unencumbered license, and any placement beyond your state of residence has to be cleared by the specialization in advance. For the license item in CastleBranch, Post notes that a compact RN license may count.
Your employer can host N 561 when the qualified psychiatric preceptor there neither supervises you directly nor is related to you. Any site, workplace or not, must have its affiliation agreement fully executed with Post, and a facility's existing contract with Post is no promise that the Clinical Coordinator will approve your particular placement there.
If your first choice falls through late, the Coordinator still has to see a complete, approvable file by the end of Week 1. That is the reason to keep a second candidate warm until the letter is signed.

Questions Post students ask
When should I start looking for an N 561 preceptor?
Begin during the 3P courses rather than after the exam. N 560 opens once you pass and N 561 follows it, so waiting for the score leaves about eight weeks to find a preceptor, execute an affiliation agreement and collect every document. A state board that asks for your clinical plan up to 60 days ahead shrinks that window further.
Can a psychiatrist precept N 561?
Yes, a physician (MD or DO) is on Post's list of acceptable preceptors for NP students. The catalog still leans toward nurse practitioners, recommending them for two or more clinical courses and preferring them throughout. If a psychiatrist is your best option for N 561, plan NP preceptors for at least two of the four later courses so the recommendation is still met.
My best preceptor lead sees only adults. Will that work for N 561?
Possibly. Post's PMHNP site rule speaks of patients across the lifespan, and the Clinical Coordinator decides whether a specific site fits. Raise it before you commit. An adult-only preceptor may suit N 565 better, since its description names adults and older adults, while N 563 and N 567 point toward children and teenagers.
Does N 561 have a separate paperwork deadline from my other courses?
It has its own. Post checks the clinical file for each preceptorship term by the end of Week 1, and a student missing an item is removed from that term. In N 561 the affiliation agreement, the preceptor agreement letter and the NP Clinical Schedule are all first-time documents, so they need more lead time than in later terms.
Is N 561 offered every month?
Post's NP pages advertise monthly start dates, yet in Post's 2024 course schedule the NP courses appeared only in six odd-month terms (January, March, May, July, September, November). Whether that pattern holds now could not be confirmed. Ask your Student Success Advisor which term your N 561 falls in, then count your preceptor search back from that date.
